Washington, D.C. – Wednesday, Congresswoman Aumua Amata, was notified by Interior Assistant Secretary for Insular Areas Esther Kia’aina in regards to the awarding of $926,328 in grant assistance from the Office of Insular Affairs’ Coral Reef Initiative Program to a variety of projects and initiatives designed to improve the health and management of coral reefs in the American Samoa, and the other Territories.

Washington, D.C. – Thursday, Congresswoman Aumua Amata, U.S. Members of Congress Amata Radewagen (AS) Dan Newhouse (WA-4), Dave Reichert (WA-8), and Mike Coffman (CO-6) have introduced the Protecting Orderly and Responsible Transit of Shipment (PORTS) Act (H.R. 3398). The prolonged contract negotiations and slowdown of cargo handling at the West Coast ports late last year and earlier this year caused significant disruptions throughout the economy. Accordingly, it became evident that Congress must find a way to prevent this from happening again.

Washington, D.C. – Wednesday, Congresswoman Aumua Amata, For the hotly contested floor debate yesterday on H.R. 1994, the VA Accountability Act, which split Members largely along party lines, House Veterans Affairs Committee Chairman Jeff Miller (R-FL), who managed the debate for the Majority, selected Amata as one of only eight speakers to speak in support of the measure during the half-hour allotted to the majority side. When the smoke cleared, the GOP had prevailed with the passage of the bill by a vote of 256 – 170, including a number of Democrats joining the winning side. The measure will now move to the Senate for consideration.
