Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Uifa’atali Amata is welcoming notice of two U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) grants, both regarding protections for the community from hazardous materials.
One grant of $150,000 is for the American Samoa Department of Homeland Security (ASDHS), a discretionary preparedness grant that will fund 700 emergency responder trainings through exercise drills and HAZMAT courses and conferences.

Pago Pago, American Samoa – Congresswoman Uifa’atali Amata announced today that the U.S. Congress has approved $2,437,602 in funding through the Federal Highway Administration’s Ferry Boat Program to support a new inter-island ferry for the Manuʻa Islands. This grant will fund the design, construction, and delivery of a modern ferry to replace aging vessels, ensuring safe, reliable, and consistent transportation for passengers and cargo within the Manuʻa Islands.
Washington, D.C. — Congresswoman Uifa’atali Amata has sent a letter to the United States Trade Representative, the Honorable Jamieson Greer, as well as submitted her message via the public comment portal, and Monday she attended the USTR hearing, in support of her call for a local exemption from expected USTR shipping fees on Chinese ships, as American Samoa relies on certain vessels that serve the port of Pago Pago without reasonable possibility of alternative shipping services.

This grant of $755,000 is in support of airport infrastructure projects in the Airport Improvement Program (AIP).
Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Uifa’atali Amata met with senior officials on Tuesday from both Alaska and Hawaiian Airlines for a briefing and to discuss issues of concerns that could arise related to the proposed merger between the two airlines, as recently announced, in which Alaska Air will acquire Hawaiian Airlines for approximately $1.9 billion subject to federal regulatory approval.
