August 19, 2016

Washington, D.C. – Friday, Congresswoman Aumua Amata, announced that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/ CDC –OSTLTS Office for State, Tribal, Local and Territorial Support, have awarded a grant in the amount of $82,851 in assistance toward the Preventive Health Services program in American Samoa.

“Being small in size and isolated from any major land mass, funding plays a crucial role in the improvement to our islands healthcare system,” stated Amata. “There is still much to be done when it comes to healthcare improvement in our islands, but we remain optimistic and ever grateful for every bit of funding we receive.”

The Preventive Health and Health Services Block Grant will be used to address basic health concerns such as tooth decay among children, food sanitation and injuries to older adults. Other portions of the grant will also be dedicated to responding to emerging health threats and other prevention efforts to address health concerns such as skin cancer, child safety, and dental programs.

“This program will go a long way in safeguarding the health and welfare of the locals,” continued Amata. “I want to commend Project Director, Motusa Nua, and other local officials for doing their part in securing this funding for our people. I look forward to continuing to work towards building a healthier community and to protect our people from existent and emerging health threats.”
