Amata Announces Art Competition for Local High School Students
Washington, DC- Tuesday,Congresswoman Aumua Amata announced that for the first time, High School students from American Samoa will have the opportunity to participate in this year's Congressional Art Competition- An Artistic Discovery.
This year celebrates the 33rd Annual Congressional Art Competition - An Artistic Discovery. The nationwide art competition, which is voluntarily sponsored by Members of Congress, allows creative high school students to showcase their talents in Washington, D.C. at the US Capitol Building. The first place winner in each competition will have their winning entry displayed at the U.S. Capitol for one year, and are eligible for scholarship opportunities from the Savannah College of Arts and Design (SCAD). The winning artist is invited to fly to Washington, D.C. for a national reception honoring the winning artists from all over the country.
All entries must be an original in concept, design and execution. Art works entered in the contest may be up to 28 inches by 28 inches (including the frame) and may be up to 4 inches in depth. The following mediums are authorized:
Paintings - including oil, acrylics, and watercolor
Drawings - including pastels, colored pencil, pencil, charcoal, ink, and markers
Collage
Prints - including lithographs, silkscreen, and block prints
Mixed Media
Computer Generated Art
Photography
"This competition is an excellent opportunity for our young artists to not only be challenged locally, but to also be recognized for their talent, creativity and vision at the national level," said Amata. "I look forward to seeing all of the beautiful work our students create and also look forward to showcasing their talent for the rest of the nation," concluded Amata.
All American Samoan High Schools have been invited to participate. Each High School will hold an internal competition and then submit their Top 5 entries for the district competition to be held the week of April 13 – 17. More information regarding the exact date, time and location of the district competition will be announced shortly.
