"It is my pleasure and honor to be invited to Andrews Air Force Base to help celebrate and recognize the many contributions and achievements that Asian-Pacific Americans have made to our great nation. From our unique culture, culinary practices and art, to the construction of vital infrastructure and contributions to science and technology, APA's have always been at the forefront of American innovation," stated Amata. "It is because of this proud heritage that I arrived where I am today. I couldn't be more thankful for the influence and contributions of those who came before me, and I couldn't be more hopeful for the young Asian-Pacific Americans who will continue to build a brighter future for all of us," Amata continued.

In 1977, Congress declared the first week of May as Asian-Pacific American Heritage week; and in 1992 passed a resolution that set aside the entire month to recognize APA's and the many contributions that they have made to American culture, science and industry. The celebrations at Andrews Air Force base included traditional APA food and drink as well as performances such as traditional dancing and a martial arts demonstration.

"I want to thank the folks at Andrews AFB for inviting me and putting on such a wonderful display of our APA culture, and I want to extend a special thank you to TSgt Sonny Vaa, Jr. and Colonel Roberts for their work at the event," concluded Amata.
