August 4, 2022

Washington, D.C. — Congresswoman Aumua Amata released the following statement recognizing Purple Heart Day 2022 (August 7), and honoring American Samoa’s Purple Heart Veterans:

“Every year, Purple Heart Day calls us to remember and commemorate Veterans and Service Members who courageously served their country and were wounded or killed while serving. The Purple Heart Medal recognizes these men and women for their bravery and the great sacrifices they have made.

“In 1782, General George Washington awarded the first Purple Heart, originally named the Badge of Merit, to soldiers for ‘any singular meritorious action.’  The legacy of the Purple Heart that began with the nation’s first President carries on today in honor of our Service Member’s sacrifices, and to inspire bravery throughout the nation.

“American Samoa’s military tradition shines through all our Servicemembers, especially Purple Heart Veterans. Like so many of our people, I’m from a family that has a legacy of service in World War II, Vietnam and elsewhere, and know our people’s shared experiences in the armed forces fortify the American Samoan community. I am truly humbled to represent the many Veterans of our islands on the House Committee of Veterans’ Affairs. God bless each of our Veterans and military families as we honor our Purple Heart Veterans on this day.”
