"In 2019, the United States and Taiwan celebrated the 40-year anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act, in which Congress legislatively established a friendship with Taiwan that has stood the test of time," said Aumua Amata. "Congratulations to my friend, Dr. Tsai Ing-wen, and the people of Taiwan upon this election and exercising their democratic responsibilities. I think it says something important that a woman was decisively returned to office in the Pacific region. Taiwan has active female participation in public leadership roles and a commendable record on women's rights. President Tsai Ing-wen is a strong leader, and devoted to our shared values of freedom, peace, prosperity and personal expression. Our country's robust and reliable partnership with Taiwan is important to all of us in the vast Pacific region."
