Amata Highlights the Birthday of the U.S. Flag
Pago Pago – Congresswoman Uifa’atali Amata is highlighting the June 14th nationally celebrated birthday of the United States Flag.
“Happy birthday to ‘Old Glory!’” said Congresswoman Aumua Amata. “On this day the Continental Congress passed the first Flag Act, which included key features of a flag in use by General George Washington. Since the flag’s official birthday, the main changes have been in the number and pattern of the stars reflecting more states.”

Flags flying in American Samoa
“Here in American Samoa, we celebrate this same ‘Star-spangled Banner,’ as it has been immortalized in the National Anthem, especially on our own April 17 Flag Day, but today we join the nation in remembering the flag’s birthday,” Amata continued. “The flag is an enduring symbol of freedom, and many of our Toa o Samoa serve and have served under the flag, and we’re proud of them.”
Since 1777, another 37 stars have been added to the original 13, and the last additions were the Pacific region states of Hawaii and Alaska.
