Amata Joins Fellow House Members in Calling for a Quick Resolution to Shipping Strike

February 5, 2015

Washington D.C. -- Congresswoman Aumua Amata signed on to a letter with 84 other House Members to call for a quick resolution to negotiations between the International Longshore Warehouse Union and the Pacific Maritime Association.

The negotiations which have been ongoing for 9 months have caused a negative impact on port operations and the movement of goods across the nation. While Congress has expressed its satisfaction that the two sides have requested a federal mediator, it seems that both parties are still far from reaching an agreement and the possibility of a shutdown is increasing daily.

"We must ensure that the flow of goods in and out of our ports continues unabated. I encourage both sides to come together and reach an agreement that both parties can abide by. During this time of economic uncertainty, we must do all that we can to make sure that our nation and our trading partners can continue to conduct business. I also want to thank Governor Lolo for his input on this issue which is so important to American Samoa," said Amata.
