Amata Pledges Support for ASG Efforts During Coronavirus Response

March 16, 2020

Washington, D.C.—Monday, Congresswoman Aumua Amata passed along new guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), pledged support for American Samoa Government efforts throughout the COVID-19 response, and thanked Governor Lolo upon being notified of the Territory's action plan and ongoing efforts to reduce risk in the islands.

"I appreciate our medical professionals and all their preparation, and the hard work that went into the Territory's plan," said Aumua Amata. "Thank you to Governor Lolo and his team for sending me a copy. Congress has passed $8 billion in funds directly for the nationwide health effort, and President Trump's declaration frees up $50 billion to use in response. This week, the Senate will consider the additional economic legislation passed late Friday in the House, and I anticipate more legislation to follow. The President is strongly advising us all to stay home and do our part to help stop the spread."

In new guidelines, the CDC and President Trump are advising everyone to limit gatherings to fewer than 10 people for at least the next two weeks, in an effort to slow the spread over the next 15-day critical period nationally.

On Monday, President Trump held a call with G7 leaders about the worldwide efforts, and the Vice President and his team continues to provide updates. This group includes the Surgeon General of the United States Admiral Jerome Adams, Center for Medicare and Medicaid Administrator Seema Verma, Dr. Ben Carson and many others. Last week, Congresswoman Amata participated in a briefing for Members of Congress with the Vice President, and an economic impact briefing with White House advisor economist Larry Kudlow.

"I will do my best to keep you informed," said Congresswoman Amata. "The administration's health advisers and CDC are putting out important information. We need to think of others and do our part by respecting these recommendations and staying home as much as possible."
