Amata Recognizes National PTSD Awareness Month

June 18, 2019

Pago Pago—This month, Congresswoman Aumua Amata is recognizing National PTSD Awareness Month, an important topic of concern for our Veterans and Armed Forces. She released the following statement highlighting the serious nature of this national health need:

"This year, the Congressional Committee on Veterans' Affairs has made reducing and preventing Veterans suicides the number one priority of the Committee in working with the Department of Veterans' Affairs (VA). I appreciate the bipartisan leadership of Chairman Mark Takano and Ranking Member Dr. Phil Roe, as we are united in these legislative efforts. I know that PTSD can show up in various ways for different people, including symptoms such as sleeplessness, anxiety, tension, stress, depression, severe changes in weight or other health issues.

PTSD is a serious matter. Please don't struggle alone. Talk to a medical professional, and find out what services might be available through the VA or Medicaid. I'm encouraged that the Trump Administration has requested a record amount for Veterans services and VA modernization. These funds include implementing changes from recent major legislation, including health care records, reducing backlogs, access issues, mental health, and other needs and services.

Congress is in the process of producing the next VA budget authorization and appropriations. I have high hopes for VA improvement, and recruiting and retaining the much-needed professionals in that public service. The message of this month is to be aware and involved in the lives of our loved ones, notice major changes in behavior or demeanor, and serve those who served. God bless our Veterans, and thank all of you who served."
