Amata’s Statement Regarding Hurricane Michael

October 10, 2018

Washington, DC – Wednesday, Congresswoman Aumua Amata released the following statement concerning Hurricane Michael, which has reached landfall in the Florida panhandle region of the United States mainland:

"Our prayerful thoughts are with those enduring this powerful storm, or already displaced by its approach. It appears the very high winds and rain from this storm will widely impact shoreline and cities over a large area, perhaps even the nearby National Forest and the military bases, where some of our own Samoan and Polynesian community are likely to serve.

"We know that the Trump Administration has made every effort to be prepared, and FEMA has responded quickly in advance of the storm, is on the scene and will use every available resource to assist those in need or peril. My friend, Administrator Brock Long, has invited me to come to FEMA headquarters to see how they work, and I look forward to that opportunity in the remainder of this congressional session later this year."

"In American Samoa, as an island Territory, we live with constant awareness of our great ocean. We know the power of wind and waves, and we have the memory of our own storms and tsunamis. In this time, we send our very best to the people of Florida and others affected by this storm. We know the generous spirit of Americans will respond once again, during the extensive recovery effort that is sure to come."
