Amata Supports Food for Peace Resolution on Effort’s 70th Anniversary
Washington, D.C. –Congresswoman Uifa’atali Amata cosponsored a bipartisan Resolution on Wednesday, the 70th anniversary of the program, that supports renewal of Food for Peace in the upcoming Farm Bill.
“Food for Peace was signed into law by President Eisenhower, who first appointed Samoan leadership for American Samoa,” said Aumua Amata. “For 70 years, the United States through Food for Peace has worked to prevent child hunger and chronic malnourishment, which is a problem in many places in the world. This effort should be renewed along with the important Farm Bill.”
The Resolution is led by Reps. Jim Costa (D-Calif.) and Dusty Johnson (R-S.D.), with 34 Members of Congress including Amata cosponsoring it at introduction.
Established in 1954, Food for Peace sends U.S.-produced food to countries in times of famine, drought, or other hunger struggles.Food for Peace has the support of Save the Children, World Vision, World Food Program USA, Alliance to End Hunger, InterAction, MercyCorps, Oxfam America, and Bread for the World.
The Farm Bill authorizes U.S. agricultural policy, including local nutrition programs and USDA grants in American Samoa, historically for five years at a time, and currently is due for renewal by September 30, 2024.
