Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Uifa’atali Amata took part this week in a White House event honoring Women’s History Month, and had the opportunity there to express appreciation to Admiral Rachel L. Levine, M.D., who heads up the U.S. Public Health Service, and also serves as U.S. Department of HHS Assistant Secretary for Health.

Congresswoman Amata thanked Admiral Rachel Levine for the federal health response to American Samoa.

In these roles, Dr. Levine was instrumental in sending the team to American Samoa that is currently working to contain and combat Covid-19 on the island.

“I took the opportunity to thank Admiral Levine for all the good work this federal team is doing on behalf of the health of our people,” Amata said. “Right now, Covid response is priority one in American Samoa. This is one of those times when federal response capabilities are so important to offset the challenges caused by our remote location, and it was good to see HHS and FEMA have this team of professionals ready and on board the DOD flight.”

Amata accompanied the initial team of 55 individuals to American Samoa. Many of them expect to remain on island for about two months to strengthen the health services capabilities during this Covid response.

The White House Women’s History Month reception celebrated women leaders across the country, and highlighted efforts to address issues of pay inequality.
