June 1, 2022

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Uifa’atali Amata took part in a Congressional Delegation (CODEL) as part of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs last week through Memorial Day. Starting in Tunisia, Members of Congress toured the North Africa American Cemetery in Carthage, Tunisia; met with Tunisia Minister of National Defence Imed Memmich, among others; interacted with U.S. military as they were engaged in Exercise Phoenix Express in the Mediterranean Sea; and held meetings at the United States Embassy in Tunis.

“What a special occasion to honor and keep in remembrance our U.S. veterans buried in North Africa, who gave all in the cause of freedom,” said Aumua Amata. “It was also an exceptional opportunity to see Exercise Phoenix Express, in which our professional all-volunteer Armed Forces worked together with the forces of a dozen other countries in preparations to keep peace in an important region of the world.”

The North Africa American Cemetery is the resting place of known 2,841 U.S. military, and a Wall of the Missing, which commemorates 3,724 U.S. names spanning service in World War II to the Persian Gulf. The 27-acre cemetery was dedicated in 1960.

During Exercise Phoenix Express, Congresswoman Amata and her colleagues observed as 13 nations participated in the effort, emphasizing regional cooperation, maritime domain awareness, information-sharing practices, and operational capabilities for security in the Mediterranean Sea.
