Press Release

Washington, D.C. – Monday, Congresswoman Aumua Amata welcomed a food safety grant of nearly $50,000 in federal funds for the American Samoa Department of Agriculture.

“Food safety is an important priority, and I’m glad to see these federal funds to help our Agriculture Department provide this program,” said Aumua Amata. “Grants like these are a way to boost the services available in American Samoa.”

Specifically, the S49,978 grant was authorized by Congress through the Food and Drug Administration, which is an agency of the U.S. Health and Human Services Department. The research demonstration grant is directed to the American Samoa Food Safety Program.

“We appreciate this federal support for American Samoa from the Food and Drug Administration and Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb,” continued Congresswoman Amata. “We also appreciate Secretary Alex Azar and the Health and Human Services Department.”

“Thank you to Agriculture Director Filifaatali Mike Fuiava and anyone else in American Samoa Government involved in this effort,” concluded Amata.
