Amata Welcomes Health Grant

November 23, 2022

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Uifa’atali Amata is welcoming notice of a health grant, following the application process by the American Samoa Department of Health, to ensure available care and treatment for HIV, HV, and TB.

“Thank you first of all to Ruth Te’o for her leadership on this effort, and congratulations to Director Motusa Nua, and everyone taking part in this work at LBJ Tropical Medical Center,” said Aumua Amata.

This new, discretionary health services grant of $431,378 is through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the National Center for HIV, Viral Hepatitis, STDS & TB Prevention. These federal funds are designated to our Health Department’s HIV/STD/VH/TB prevention and control program, specifically focused on improving the efforts regarding HIV and viral Hepatitis prevention and control.

“I’m happy to pass along funding notifications just as soon they are received from federal departments and agencies,” said Aumua Amata. “We especially appreciate grants in the medical field to promote the health of our people, knowing we sometimes have added challenges getting all the advantages of modern medical technology in the South Pacific.”

The CDC, directed by Dr. Rochelle Walensky, is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), under Secretary Xavier Becerra.
