June 1, 2021

Washington, D.C. – Tuesday, Congresswoman Uifa'atali Amata is pleased to welcome a federal grant worth $583,215 for American Samoa. The federal grant, awarded through the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is part of the National Initiative to Address COVID-19 Health Disparities. The initiative aims to address health disparities across America which put certain communities at higher risk of exposure to COVID-19.

"I congratulate Director Motusa Nua and our hardworking people in the American Samoa Department of Health on this achievement, specifically Ruth Te'o whose efforts led to this grant," Uifa'atali said. "The work of safeguarding the health of American Samoans is paramount, and I am confident that these funds will help us meet our critical needs in our territory."

This initiative by HHS and the CDC was funded by legislation passed by Congress in the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act earlier this year. The HHS is headed by Secretary Xavier Becerra and the CDC by Dr. Rochelle Walensky.
