Amata Welcomes Two Federal Grants for American Samoa’s Health Efforts

September 21, 2018

Washington, D.C. – Friday, Congresswoman Aumua Amata welcomed a total of $535,000 in federal funding for two health-related programs in American Samoa.

"Federal funds like these are especially necessary to American Samoa's efforts to provide as many health services as possible," said Aumua Amata. "I appreciate these federal resources, including $285,000 for our health programs and another $250,000 for mental health and opioid services."

Both grants are through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), led by Secretary Alex Azar. Specifically, one grant of $285,000 is directed from the federal Health Resources and Services Administration to the American Samoa Department of Health for Pacific Basin health funding. A separate grant of $250,000 is directed from the federal Center for Substance Abuse Treatment to the American Samoa Department of Human and Social Services for the Territory's Opioid Response Project.

"I want to say thank you to everyone responsible for these projects, especially Elizabeth Ponausuia," continued Congresswoman Amata. "Also, thank you to Human and Social Services Director Muavaefa'atasi John Suisala and Health Director Motusa Tuileama Nua."

"We appreciate HHS Secretary Alex Azar and the Department's support for American Samoa," concluded Amata.
