Aumua Announces $1,000,000 HRSA Grant Award for Home Visiting Program

Washington, D.C. –Thursday, Congresswoman Aumua Amata, announced today that the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) under the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Administration (HHS) has awarded a grant in the amount of $1,000,000 to the LBJ Medical Center in Pago Pago for the Maternal, Infant and Early Childhood Home visiting Program.

“As you know, many at-risk children and expecting mothers often require additional support and resources not only during regular visits to the hospital or health center, but in everyday home life as well. This award will help connect our young women and families with trained professionals as they hone the skills necessary to raise happy, healthy children.” stated Amata.

Families that elect to participate in local home visiting programs receive advice, guidance and other help from health, social service and child development professionals.

Through regular, planned home visits, families and home visitors and work together to:

  • Improve health and development.
  • Prevent child injuries, child abuse, neglect, or maltreatment, and reduce emergency department visits.
  • Improve school readiness and achievement.
  • Reduce crime, including domestic violence.
  • Improve family economic self-sufficiency.
  • Improve the coordination and referrals for other community resources and supports.

“I want to thank those individuals at HHS and HRSA for their insight and recognition of the need for such assistance in American Samoa. I also would like to thank Project Director Margaret Sesepasara and the others here at home who worked so hard to obtain these vital funds for our island,” concluded Amata.
