Aumua Announces $400 K Grant for Zika Surveillance & Monitoring
Washington, D.C. – Monday, Congresswoman Aumua Amata, was pleased to announce earlier today that the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention / CDC-NCBDDD National Center For Birth Defects & Developmental Disabilities has awarded the American Samoa Department of Health $400,000 in grant funding for Zika surveillance and monitoring in American Samoa.
“This additional funding for Zika prevention through monitoring and surveillance will go a long way to helping eradicate this awful disease that has come to our home,” said Amata. “I look forward to continuing to work with the CDC to ensure that we eliminate Zika as quickly as possible,” continued Amata.
American Samoa has been one of the hardest hit regions of the U.S. states and territories with over 700 reported cases. Congressional action has been swift in allocating funding for Zika control and eradication, with more actions to follow.
“I want to thank Dr. Scott Anesi with the American Samoa Department of Health and their staff for helping to obtain these important funds for our islands. I also want to thank the officials at the CDC who recognized the need for these funds and the importance of combating Zika here in American Samoa,” concluded Amata.
