Aumua Participates in Roundtable on VA Hiring Practices

December 3, 2015

Washington, D.C. –Wednesday, Congresswoman Aumua Amata, took part in a roundtable conversation on Capitol Hill, entitled, "Assessing How to Improve Recruitment, Retention, and Hiring Practices across VA". The purpose of the roundtable discussion was to facilitate an open conversation on what can be done to improve the VA's ability to attract, hire, and retain quality employees.

"With all of the discussion lately on how hard it is to fire a negligent VA employee, which is unfortunately true, I am glad to see that we are now focusing on legislation that will hopefully reduce the number of negligent individuals in the first place," said Amata. "While the vast majority of VA employees perform their duties to the highest standard, there are always the few bad apples that spoil the bunch," continued Amata.

Other participants in the discussion included, Subcommittee Chairman Wenstrup, Subcommittee Chairman Benishek, other House Veterans Affairs Committee members, and representatives from several service and veteran organizations.

"As we continue to address the issues with those few negligible VA employees, we must try to mitigate what causes some of the issues in the first place. I believe that this legislation will be a step in the right direction, and help cure some of the ills troubling the VA," concluded Amata.
