Congresswoman Amata visited Yale University a few days ago, warmly hosted by American Samoa’s college students there and the Chen family at Yale’s historic campus, during their Pasifika Festival celebrating the people and culture of the Pacific Islands. “Fa’afetai especially to my friend Angela Chen of American Samoa for inviting me. She is soon to graduate from Yale, and making us proud, along with her brother Victor, an Air Force officer and an Air Force Academy graduate, and their sister Amelie, who was on hand for the Festival from Harvard where she currently studies. The two sisters danced the Siva,” said Amata. “It was a joy to see several of our Samoan students, including Mata’uitafa T.S. Fai’ai of Leone Village, and Jairus Fuimaono of Pago Pago, who is the nephew of Dr. Saipale Fuimaono, our Director of Health. It is wonderful to have our Samoan culture so well represented! This was a great chance for Pacific Islander cultures to be highlighted at one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious colleges. We love our island heritage, and especially when our next generation of leaders cherishes it and preserves it, as these students are doing while they excel in their academics.”
