Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Uifa’atali Amata is welcoming bipartisan House passage Wednesday by a vote of 420-4 of legislation she cosponsored to establish a new committee of Veterans from the islands to advise the U.S. Department of Veterans’ Affairs (VA) and the VA Secretary on Veterans’ issues affecting them. These advising Veterans would be from the five U.S. Territories and the three Freely Associated States to provide direct input about VA services to the insular areas.

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Uifa’atali Amata voted in the Natural Resources Committee for the American Fisheries Advisory Committee Act of 2021, H.R. 3128, which was passed and will be sent to the full House of Representatives. Congresswoman Amata was the sole original cosponsor upon the bill’s introduction in June by Dean of the House Congressman Don Young (R-Alaska).
Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Uifa’atali Amata has requested the United States Army consider options for Army recruit required physical examinations in American Samoa, which are currently held up by COVID-related travel restrictions between Hawaii and American Samoa. The letter, dated November 12th, is addressed to Major General Kevin Vereen of U.S. Army Recruiting Command.
Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Uifa’atali Amata is highlighting the continuation of 100 percent federal funding through the end of 2021 for any emergency protective measure grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as part of COVID-19 response. In setting this federal policy with current Covid relief funds, the administration referred to the authority provided by Congress in the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act.

The first bill, HR 1772, is officially titled as the Passports for Purple Hearts Act and would exempt recipients of the venerated Purple Heart decoration from paying fees associated with obtaining a US passport. This bill is led by Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH) and supported by Members of both parties, including GOP Conference Chair Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY).
