Washington, D.C. – Tuesday, Congresswoman Aumua Amata, announced that the Administration for Children and Families (a division of DHHS) has awarded a $2.25 million dollar grant for American Samoa’s Head Start Program. These funds are part of a Non-Competing Continuation first initiated in 2013.
Washington, D.C. –Wednesday, Congresswoman Aumua Amata, took time from her busy schedule Wednesday morning to speak to a group of students from across the nation, including American Samoa, who are in Washington as part of the Junior Statesmen Foundation’s (JSF) Summer School program.
Washington, D.C. –Friday, Congresswoman Aumua Amata, and her fellow colleagues in the House of Representatives welcomed over 400 student artists to Washington, D.C. yesterday. The students are in Washington as part of the annual Congressional Art Competition. Mr. Benjamin (AJ) Liaga of Samoana High School won this year’s competition in American Samoa with his entry entitled Folauga.
Washington D.C. –Monday, Congresswoman Aumua Amata, spoke to the new graduates of the University of La Verne last week, during the commencement ceremony for the Class of 2016.
Washington D.C. –Thursday, Congresswoman Aumua Amata, welcomed the Hokule’a as it made its way to Washington D.C. via the Potomac River. Many from the local Pacific Island community showed up to join in the festivities and welcome the crew to Washington.
Washington, D.C. –Wednesday, Congresswoman Aumua Amata, during a legislative hearing, held by the House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Indian, Insular & Alaska Native Affairs, invited a large group of students who were visiting Washington as part of the Close-Up program, onto the dais usually reserved strictly for Committee Members.
Washington, D.C. –Wednesday, Congresswoman Aumua Amata, gave the keynote address during the Library of Congress’ (LOC) presentation on Samoan culture in honor of Asian-Pacific Islander American Heritage Month entitled, Generations of Samoan Culture & History.
Pago Pago –Monday, Congresswoman Aumua Amata, congratulated the winner of the 2016 “An Artistic Discovery” Congressional Art Competition upon her return to the islands for the Flag Day celebration.
Pago Pago –Thursday, Congresswoman Aumua Amata, expressed her sincere gratitude to House Education & Workforce Committee Chairman John Kline for his support of a most generous increase in funding for the elementary and secondary education divisions of the American Samoa Department of Education (ASDOE). The increase is the result of a new formula that Congresswoman Amata was able to negotiate into the bill. This change in formula will allow for an estimated 67 percent increase for elementary and secondary education in the islands.
Pago Pago –Sunday, Congresswoman Aumua Amata, assisted in opening the Lions Club meeting at American Samoa Community College (ASCC) yesterday, by leading the group in the Pledge of Allegiance.
