Washington, D.C. – In a Wednesday oversight hearing, Congresswoman Uifa’atali Amata raised the issue of prioritizing Buy American laws in U.S. government purchases, including tuna, and took part in a letter to U.S. Department of Veterans’ Affairs (VA) Secretary Denis McDonough urging more effort to follow Buy American laws.

Washington, D.C. – House Veterans’ Affairs Committee Vice Chairman Uifa’atali Amata is welcoming Thursday’s VA announcement that Veterans and survivors who apply (or submit their intent to file) for PACT Act benefits by 11:59PM Eastern Time on this Monday, August 14, 2023, will be eligible to have their benefits backdated to August 10, 2022 – the day that President Biden signed the PACT Act into law. This is an extension from the past original deadline of August 9, 2023.

The next legislative step will be consideration by the whole House of Representatives.

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Uifa’atali Amata is highlighting a cost of living boost in several Veterans’ benefits next year. The House of Representatives passed the Veterans’ Compensation Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) Act of 2023, S. 777, unanimously on May 23. It had already passed the Senate, and President Biden signed the increase into law Wednesday.
